Stop Traditional Link Building…and Focus on Local

Google’s Panda and Penguin algorithm updates are wreaking some havoc among marketers whose websites are no longer in “compliance” with the search engine’s rules. Rather than beating your head against the wall – wondering how to manage these and subsequent updates – why not focus less on link building and more on local?

In Search Engine Land’s The Best Link Building For Local SEO — None!, author Chris Silver Smith says he’s been approached by numerous small-to-medium businesses that were seeking help with “various degrees of penalization” as a result of Google’s updates. Link building is the typical culprit, says Smith, thanks to the “overwhelming number of articles out there advising businesses on how to increase their inlinks in order to improve their rankings in Google, Bing, and Yahoo! search results.”

Smith advises firms to “ambitiously create content and involve yourself in social media.” Frequently produce content on an ongoing basis, whether it be through writing, posting images, or posting videos. Work to increase your engagement and influence, Smith adds, and focus on local in addition to link building.
