Optimize your images to improve organic traffic

Search engine optimization (SEO) requires a balanced approach of strong headlines, unique information, linkbacks and optimized images. Many marketers have a grasp on content creation and link building, but making images SEO-friendly may not be a priority. Here are two ways your graphics can influence your marketing strategy.

1.) File title – If you purchase images from stock providers, you'll likely receive a file with a lengthy name comprised of numbers and letters. These characters mean nothing to Google crawlers or users, so taking the time to title them accordingly may provide additional worth to online visitors. You may want to change the image name to the title of the article or include the subject of the image and a keyword. This small effort can play into your overall SEO campaign and help boost online rankings.

2.) The Alt tag – You may be unaware of the importance the alt tag has on your SEO opportunity. This additional label gives you the chance to describe your image, which improves its impact online. Take advantage of this field just as you did with the file title. It's important to be descriptive in the alt tag, so don't force a keyword in the text if it won't make sense.

Google and other search engines have crawlers that analyze web pages. They don't recognize colors or the beauty of certain images, only the text behind the graphic element. When you include the appropriate information in the title and alt tag, the crawlers find your content useful, and your organic traffic may increase.
