In July 2012, there were 17.7 billion explicit core searches conducted, which is up 3 percent month-over-month, and Google continued to dominate the space, comScore reports. In fact, for the second consecutive month, Google maintained its record-high 66.8 percent of searches in a month's span. It's obvious people prefer Google, even when the company's ever-changing algorithms make it hard for SEO professionals to keep abreast of online marketing best practices.
Recently, Google unveiled a potential change to its search engine results pages (SERPs), which reduces the traditional 10 listings to only seven. What's more, Google also shows signs that it's even easier for one site to dominate all of the top seven listings. Search Engine Land ran a few preliminary queries and found that certain keyword-rich searches produced SERPs with links all leading to different sections of the same domain.
Dr. Peter Meyers from SEOmoz ran a study that found approximately 20 percent of SERPs at Google now show only seven listings. With this reduction of frontpage links, and the potential for those first results to be from the same domain, search engine optimization techniques may prove to be even more essential for businesses that want to generate leads through organic search.
