While the world eagerly anticipates a jam-packed holiday season and prepares to ring in the new year, social media experts have been busy crunching numbers to determine the most interesting social media statistics of 2012, according to sites like the Huffington Post, Gizmodo, Marketing Land and Mediabistro.

Aside from changes to the most popular social networks that bring millions of people together, there are other social media marketing stats that B2B marketers should remember going into 2013:

-56 percent of customer tweets to companies are being ignored.
-32 percent of all internet users are using Twitter.
-50 percent of Twitter users are using the social network via mobile.
-34 percent of marketers have generated leads using Twitter.
-26 percent of retweets are incited by a request to retweet.

-Out of 17 million brand engagements, 15 percent occurred on the brand's boards, and 85 percent occurred elsewhere on Pinterest.
-43 percent of people prefer Pinterest to associate with retailers or brands.
-25 percent of Fortune Global 100 companies have Pinterest accounts.

While The Huffington Post's social media roundup did not include LinkedIn statistics, here is information provided by the social network's website:

-The B2B customer acquisition success rate is 61 percent.
-More than 2 million companies have LinkedIn pages.
-300,000 unique domains actively use the LinkedIn share button on their sites.
-92 percent of B2B journalists have a profile.
-80 percent of members influence business decisions at their company.
-3.2 million VPs and are members.
-45 percent of B2B companies have gained a customer from using LinkedIn.
