Microsoft attempts to enter the social media game with Yammer acquisition

Social media has certainly become an influential part of society, including the business world, which has found websites like Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest to be of extreme value. However, it seems like there could be a new player entering the game soon, as Microsoft has recently confirmed its purchase of the social network service Yammer in a $1.2 billion cash transaction, Search Engine Watch reports.

The deal, which is still pending approval from regulators, will complement Microsoft’s Office platform and assist in improving B2B marketing and lead generation and nurturing practices.

Yammer operates out of locations in San Francisco and London, and the service focuses on the business space. The social service affects enterprises and would allow Microsoft Office users to integrate their outputs directly onto their Yammer profiles.

The acquisition could prove to be beneficial for Microsoft in numerous ways, most importantly, it keeps the company relevant in a marketplace where organizations like Google and Facebook offer youth and trendy aspects to social networking.
