Google’s Top Heavy algorithm gets a refresh

Google announced another algorithm refresh on October 9, 2012. This update affects the search engine's Page Layout filter, which was initially announced in January 2012 and is often called the "Top Heavy" update.

The recent refresh is minor, as it only affects 0.7 percent of English-language queries. Websites that don't have much content "above-the-fold" can be affected by this algorithm. If an internet user clicks on a website and the part of the page he or she sees first doesn't have a lot of value to the visitor, Google identifies the site as not very helpful, and alters its rank accordingly. The goal of the update is to help internet users find quality information faster than ever before.

The two major changes that occurred from the latest update are helping increase search quality across the globe. According to Search Engine Land, the Top Heavy update is now a global resource. In addition, websites that were hit by the Top Heavy algorithm in the beginning of 2012 and have since revised their content marketing practices were potentially freed from the clutches of the feature.
