Bing releases Webmaster Guidelines to improve SEO
On Friday, Bing released its first-ever Webmaster Guidelines to help users improve SEO and increase readership.
The guidelines offer definitions and general information about broad topics. The first of these is content. "By providing clear, deep, easy-to-find content on your website, we are more likely to index and show your content in search results," Bing states.
The search engine explains that websites with little content and boast mostly ads or redirect visitors to other sites will not rank high in organic search listings. Content should be easy to navigate, informative and rich.
Another topic Bing's Webmaster Guidelines covers is links, warning against buying links or using link schemes to buy coverage. Site linking should be transparent and trustworthy.
Meanwhile, Bing highly recommends using social media to boost content sharing and essentially achieve a high rank in organic listings.
The search engine recognizes SEO as a valid practice, and warns against abusing it. Bing suggests implementing SEO to enhance titles, meta descriptions, internal and external linking and social sharing. To keep viewership up, content should always provide readers what they are actually looking for.
Bing's big no-nos include engaging in social media marketing schemes and duplicating content.
