Why mobile website design is no longer an option. It is required.
Since its introduction in the early 2000’s, the smartphone has become an indispensable technology. According to Pew Research, 77% of Americans own a smartphone. People socialize, do research, read news, shop and buy with smartphones hundreds of times in 24-hour-a-day period.
This is important for businesses because the smartphone and other mobile devices such as tablets have significantly transformed the process of buying. Consumers are now able to search for products, services and information on their mobile devices always as well as connect with the businesses that offer them.
Unfortunately, many businesses, particularly small businesses, have not added mobile website design to their websites to be compatible with mobile devices. Research has shown that as many as 91% of small business websites are not mobile-compatible. Thus, when customers visit their site, they are presented with a small, hard-to-read website requiring lots of pinching and zooming.
Having a mobile-friendly website design (“mobile-responsive”, as it is known) is no longer an option. It is critical if you want to survive in business. A non-mobile responsive website has a negative impact on the business almost every day. Businesses that do not have a good mobile website design unknowingly relinquish much of their potential business because they cannot deliver a positive user experience, attract potential prospects through the search engines, and move those prospects through the sales funnel.
A mobile website design also improves search engine ranking because Google ranks mobile-responsive websites more highly than non-mobile-responsive sites. In late 2016 Google implemented their “mobile first index” in which Google ranks mobile sites higher in the results than non-mobile sites. Most importantly, in the past Google crawled your website like a desktop user would do. Now Google will crawl your website as a mobile user. That is a distinction with a big impact.
If you do not have a mobile-responsive site, your website will be downgraded in search results significantly. If the links on your mobile site are not the same as the desktop (or are not connected) and Google cannot follow them, your site will be downgraded in the search results pages (SERPs). Anything that causes difficulty for the mobile web-user will negatively impact your website.
The bottom line is this: having a mobile website design is no longer an option. If you have a non-mobile site, now is the time to have it updated because every day you wait you are unwittingly chasing away potential prospects who find your site too hard navigate.
