Google Adwords Update Can Affect Local Search Marketers
Good news for businesses that use Google Adwords: Google has made changes to local search results and Google Maps that can positively impact retailers and service providers with physical locations.
Local business ads have begun appearing in the map section of the Local Finder results. The map section can be reached by clicking “More places” at the bottom of the local ad results (the “3-pack”) in the main Google search results. For example, if your business wants to expand its data storage off-site and you search for “colocation data centers in Phoenix AZ”, three local data centers will be listed along with a link titled “More places”. Clicking the link will take you to the map results.
The addition of the ads in the Local Finder results means that ads for businesses that aren’t displayed in the main Google local listings have a new way of getting to the top of the results if users click through the main ads to see more listings.
The ads in the Local Finder rely on AdWords location information (called an “extension”). These extensions are added when you set up your business in “Google my Business”. Google will use the location information to place your ad in the map results if your ad doesn’t make it into the Local Search 3-pack results.
