3 Clever Tactics to Improve Your Search Engine Optimization

improve SEOYou may already know the basics for improving your on-page search engine optimization: optimize your URLs and meta data, use H1 and H2 headings, use the keyword throughout the copy, include links from other pages, add image alt text, etc.  The problem is everyone does that. So what are some unusual methods to improve your search engine rankings?  Here are three methods to consider:

1. Lower the bounce rate

Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors to a particular website who navigate away from the site after viewing only one page. A high bounce rate (100%) means everyone who comes to your site leaves without clicking around to other pages. A study by SimilarWeb.com found that sites with a high bounce rate tended to rank lower in Google than sites with a low bounce rate.

This makes sense because if most of your web visitors leave your site without looking around that sends a message to Google that people don’t like your content. Since Google wants to present websites with the most relevant content, they may down-rank sites that have a high bounce rate.

How to decrease the bounce rate

First, write great content. Make sure that everything you include on the landing page is helpful to the visitor.  Leave out anything that is superfluous. Second, make sure the content matches the promise that brought them to your site in the first place. If you promise in an article to teach the visitor a new technique or reveal a secret of some kind, don’t link them to your home page.  Link them to the content you promised they’d get.

2. Optimize for Local

Local search engine optimization is an important ranking criterion. Information that tells Google the location of your business can cause your website listing to move higher on the search result pages when the searchers enter that location.

So if you want to rank higher, strategically include location-specific keywords in and around your website.  Place the city and street address in your copy everywhere it seems appropriate. Include your local information on external sites (like Yelp) and link them to your site.  This will reinforce Google’s awareness of your location, which will increase the chance of your site being displayed higher on the search result pages.  Here’s more information about search engine optimization.

3. Optimize for mobile

On April 21, 2015, Google Search launched a whole new algorithm and expanded its use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking criterion in search engine optimization. This change affected mobile searches in all languages worldwide and had a significant impact in Google Search results. In addition, 4.8 billion people use mobile phones world wide and 75% of internet users were online via a mobile device at the end of 2015.  So it’s important to ensure that your content is mobile optimized and searchable for mobile devices.
