Social Networking Trends: Facebook Offers New Ad Format
Facebook is now offering a new ad format called Sponsored Stories. This is the latest social networking social marketing trend and companies like Starbucks and Coca-Cola are among the first to implement this social marketing strategy.
Sponsored Stories takes friends’ actions, such as an action with a Facebook app or mobile check-in, and turns them into a promotion for the company. Sponsored Stories is “a way for marketers to sponsor activities that happen throughout the News Feed,” Facebook Product Marketing Lead Jim Squires told Mashable.
Squires also provided a hypothetical example of a store like Whole Foods, who wishes to increase its exposure, now having the ability to pay to have a percentage of Whole Foods check-ins featured in Sponsored Stories in the right-side column of a user’s Facebook page. Sponsored Stories would not show Whole Foods content directly but rather a user’s friends interactions with Whole Foods. “The advertiser is not controlling the message; it’s about actions,” Squires said.
