Google News is Officially Advertising

Google News has officially added more coverage for online advertisers who use Google AdWords!  Many U.S.-based searchers have been noticing sponsored link ads on Google News for the past few months (they began testing ads on Google News in November ’08), but now it’s going to stick.

Here’s what Google has to say about their new “News” format:
“In recent months we’ve been experimenting with a variety of different formats, like overlay ads on embedded videos from partners like the AP. We’ve always said that we’d unveil these changes when we could offer a good experience for our users, publishers and advertisers alike, and we’ll continue to look at ways to deliver ads that are relevant for users and good for publishers, too.”

So what does this mean for you?  Well, if you go to Google, search on any topic and then click the “News” link at the top of the page, you’ll see thousands of news articles and press releases about that topic PLUS online advertising relating to that topic.  For instance, if you’re in the business of developing apps for the iPhone, your AdWords ads for “iPhone apps” might be displayed in the sponsored link section of a News search for “iphone update.”
